Alice Mildred Griffin Stephens, died on Wednesday, April 8, 2020. She was born in Broadway on November 18, 1928, to the late Herbert and Birdie Griffin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard William Stephens Sr., great-grandson Jacob Dylan McNeill, a sister Doris Fields, brother Glenn Griffin, sister- in- law Barbara Griffin. Mildred grew up in Broadway and graduated from Broadway High School in 1945. She worked at Cornell Dubilier before going to work at Heins Telephone Company in 1961. She retired from Alltel in 1989. Mildred was a longtime member of Edgewood Presbyterian Church, Edgewood Women of the Church and the Monroe Bible Class. Her passion was her family. She was very proud of and loved her son and daughter- in- law. She cherished her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved all of them beyond measure. Mildred and Bernard enjoyed camping and fishing at Emerald Isle. They had a long happy marriage of 55 years when Bernard died in 2001. Private family graveside services will be held on Saturday at 2:00pm at the Broadway Town Cemetery. She is survived by her son, Bill Stephens and wife Pam. Two grandchildren, Tracy McNeill and husband Todd, Cole Stephens and wife Lisa. Three great grandchildren, Gavin McNeill, Olivia Stephens and Ivy Stephens all of Sanford. One brother Harold Griffin of Broadway. Sister- in -law Ruby Cameron Griffin of Mamers, several nieces and nephews. She cherished her dear friends from church, work, her neighbors and those who watched over her. The family would like to thank the staff of Parkview Retirement Center for the love and care given to our beloved mother and grandmother. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting memorial gifts to the Jacob Dylan McNeill Scholarship Fund, 4212 S. Plank Road, Sanford, NC 27330.
