Amos Maynard Thorne, age 89 of Broadway, died Monday (8/9/2021) at his home.  He was born in Athens, Alabama, son of the late Joseph Q. Thorne and Delia Weir "Penny" Thorne.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mavis McNeill Thorne, eight brothers and sisters and his grandson, Michael Trey Thorne.  Amos was a veteran of the United States Army, a barber by trade and retired from GKN.  He was past president of the Broadway Lions Club and served for many years retiring from Cape Fear Fire Department.  Amos was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church, serving in many different roles through the years.  He was a deacon, Sunday school teacher, member of the Baptist Men's group and was heavily involved with their mission work.  He made many trips, helping to rebuild churches and communities after flooding and natural disasters in the eastern part of our state.  Funeral services will be held on Saturday (8/14/2021) at 2pm at the Holly Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Parsons and Rev. Scott Yow officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6-8pm at the Holly Springs Baptist Church Multi-Purpose building.  Surviving is his daughter, Penny Thorne Howard and husband Buddy of Broadway, NC.  Son, Michael Scott Thorne and wife Wanda of Sanford, NC.  Sister, Clarice Smith of St. Louis, Missouri.  Grandchildren, Shelley Ward, Isaac Ward, Taylor Thorne, Baylee Thorne, Lauren Howard, Meredith Howard and two great grandchildren.  Online condolences can be made at www.smithfuneralhomebroadway.com Arrangements are by the Smith Funeral Home of Broadway.
