Clayborn Wenford McCauley, age 80, of Fuquay Varina, NC, formerly of Mamers NC, died Wednesday (September 2, 2020) at the William M. Dunlap Transitions LifeCare Center in Raleigh. He was born in Harnett County on May 11, 1940, son of the late Ernest Clayton McCauley and Nettie Elizabeth (Lizzie) McNeill McCauley. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Jim McCauley, Bob McCauley, Don McCauley and Fred McCauley.
Clayborn was a graduate of Boone Trail High School Class of 1959 where he was voted Best Sport along with a fellow classmate. He was a diehard UNC Tarheel Fan, and to him there was no other team to pull for. Clayborn worked at and retired from Sanford Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Sanford, NC. After retirement he thoroughly enjoyed working in his yard and keeping his lawn freshly mowed in the spring and summer and free of leaves in the fall. A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday (September 5, 2020) at Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Broadway, NC with Rev. Rick Carter officiating.
Surviving are his sons Terry and wife Alesha of Fuquay Varina, NC and Clay and Teresa (Terry) of Wallace, NC. He is also survived by grandchildren Blake McCauley of Fuquay Varina, NC, Dana McCauley of Austin, Texas, Brittany McCauley Douglas (Scott), Tristan McCauley (Sarah), Gabriel McCauley, step-grandchildren Justin Jeffries (Jessie) and Jessie Jeffries Perry (Brooks) all of Wilmington, NC. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren and 6 step great-grandchildren all of Wilmington, NC.
Clayborn is survived by brothers Troy McCauley (Janice) of Belmont, NC, Dougald McCauley (Nadine) of Lillington, NC, Betty Jean (Shirley) McCauley Williams of Sanford NC, Linda McCauley Cummings of Sanford, NC, sisters-in law, Marlene McCauley of Cary, NC and many nieces and nephews.
Clayborn is also survived by three very special cousins whom he enjoyed visiting and spending time with, Wendell (Pee Wee) McNeill, Lemar McNeill and Roy McNeill all of Broadway, NC.
Friends and family can visit the Smith Funeral Home in Broadway on Friday from 4-6pm and on Saturday from 9am-12pm to sign the register. Online condolences can be made at www.smithfuneralhomebroadway.com . Arrangements are by the Smith Funeral Home of Broadway. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the William M. Dunlap Transitions LifeCare Center, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607 in his name.
