Roman Yturralde, age 90 of Hampstead, formerly of Sanford, passed away on Thursday, (8/29/2024) at Stonebridge Assisted Living in Hampstead with his family by his side. He was born on April 18, 1934, son of the late Cristabol Yturralde and Leonarda Ureta Yturralde. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Condy and Bea, his wife, Faye Phillips Yturralde and his son, Christopher Roman Yturralde. Roman retired from the United States Army after a distinguished career spanning 27 years, retiring in 1980. He was a special forces soldier, and was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster), Good Conduct Medal (7 awards), Parachutist Badge, Combat Infantryman Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, Army Commendation Medal (4th Oak Leaf Cluster) Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Parachutist Badge, Republic of Vietnam Civil Action Medal 1st Class, Thai Parachutist Badge with Fourragere, Legion of Merit. He was lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW. After retiring, he opened Roman Trophies and Engraving, Inc. and worked with his daughter until retiring in 2014. Roman was loved by everyone and was a friend to many. He was a happy positive person who loved life. For the past three years, Jill enjoyed spending this time caring for her father and making lasting memories. Surviving is his daughter, Jill Yturralde Yow and husband Kevin of Hampstead, NC. Sister, Gen Mendez of Colorado; Grandchildren, Kit Yturralde, Susan Shepherd, Dylan Gibson, Dustin Yturralde; and great-grandchildren, Kaleb Yturralde, Autumn Yturralde, Sawyer Shepherd, and Ellie Shepherd; brothers-in-law, Andy Webb, Floyd Thomas and Glenn Phillips wife Tricia and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Friday (9/6/2024) at 12:00pm at Smith Funeral Home in Broadway with a service to follow at 1:00pm.
