The family of Dennis "Mac" McWilliams is deeply saddened to announce his sudden passing on August 2, 2026.

Born on October 11, 1962, in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, Mac lived a life defined by service, discipline, and an unwavering devotion to his family. He believed there was a right way to do things and expected that standard from himself first. To those who didn't know him well, his straightforward nature could seem stern or intimidating. Those fortunate enough to know him, however, understood that beneath his tough exterior was a man whose greatest expression of love was found not in words, but in his actions.

Mac proudly served his country for 21 years in the United States Air Force, where he specialized in Aircraft Armament Systems, retiring with the rank of Technical Sergeant. Throughout his distinguished military career, he was stationed at Loring Air Force Base, Maine; Andersen Air Force Base, Guam; England Air Force Base, Louisiana; RAF Upper Heyford in the United Kingdom; and Pope Air Force Base, North Carolina, where he would eventually retire. He also served in several deployed locations in support of our nation's mission.

Mac was preceded in death by his father, Francis McWilliams; his mother, Aurelia (Gromacki) McWilliams; his brother, Frank McWilliams; his sister, Joyce McWilliams; and his brother, James McWilliams.

Mac is survived by his beloved wife, Diana (Butler), with whom he shared 45 years of marriage after they were united on October 10, 1980. Together they built a life rooted in hard work, loyalty, and family. They shared a love for softball, carpentry, and home improvement projects, but their proudest accomplishment was the family they built together.

He is also survived by his daughter, Nichole (McWilliams) Cowell, and her family, Fred, Freddie, and Sammy; and by his son, Ryan McWilliams, and his family, Megan (Smith), Liam, Emersyn, and Everly.

Mac had a way of showing his love that was uniquely his own. If a pipe was leaking, a floor needed to be laid, or a project seemed impossible to tackle alone, he was there. He wasn't one to simply offer advice. He would roll up his sleeves, grab his toolbox, and make sure the job got done right. Whether he was teaching a new skill, lending the right tool, or quietly stepping in when someone needed help, his family always knew they could count on him.

Becoming "Papap" to his grandchildren brought Mac some of his greatest joy. Whether he was watching football with Freddie and Sammy, spending time with Liam, Emersyn, and Everly, cheering on Pittsburgh sports teams, spending long afternoons in the pool, or simply enjoying one another's company, he treasured every opportunity to be with them. The values he lived by, hard work, perseverance, accountability, and taking pride in a job well done, are among the many gifts he leaves behind.

Mac will be remembered as a devoted husband, proud father and grandfather, respected Air Force veteran, and loyal friend. His legacy is found not only in the years he served his country, but in the example he set for his family. Though he will be deeply missed, his steadfast love and quiet example will remain in the hearts of those who knew him for generations to come.

Family and friends will be received on Friday, August 7, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., with a service immediately following the visitation at Smith Funeral Home, Broadway, North Carolina.
