Obituary

Doralene Brown Knight, age 76, went home to her Lord on Monday (11/11/2013) at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. She was born in Harnett County, NC on February 18, 1937, daughter of the late Oris and Algie Spence Brown. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 51 years, Rabon Knight. Doralene, a loving wife, mother and grandmother, dedicated her entire life to caring for the sick and needy. She graduated from Boone Trail High School in 1955 and from Highsmith Hospital School of Nursing in Fayetteville, in 1958, where she was named Best- All-around Nurse in her class. She began her career as a Registered Nurse at the Lee County Hospital in the Medical/Surgical Department. She worked for Dr. Vance Chamblee in Broadway and then returned to Lee County Hospital to work in Obstetrics and Nursery. She nursed at Boone Trail Medical Center for 11 years and was a Charter Member of the Boone Trail Emergency Services. In 2005 she retired from the North Carolina Departent of Corrections, where she had received the North Carolina Central Region Nurse of the Year in 2004. She was a devoted, life long member of the Antioch Baptist Church in Mamers, NC. Doralene is survived by her son Jeffrey Knight of Broadway, NC ; Son Oris Knight and wife Ann of Mamers; Sisters, Barbara Koepp of Broadway, Trilby Batchelor and husband Charles of Sanford, Katrina Tankersley and husband James of Encinitas, CA; Brother Ross Brown and wife Ida of Mamers; Granddaughters, Cassie and Hayle Knight; and Grandsons, Travis, Craig and Matthew Knight. Her sister Gaynelle Hudson and husband James passed away in 2010. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Bernice Knight of Advance, NC and Laura Cagle of Carthage, NC, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 2:00pm at the Antioch Baptist Church in Mamers with Rev. David Anderson and Rev. Patrick Broaddus officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 1:00-2:00pm, at the Antioch Baptist Church. The family wishes to acknowledge the compassionate care and love shown to Doralene by the members of Antioch Baptist Church and the Mamers community during her illness. Contributions in memory of Doralene may be made to Antioch Baptist Church, PO Box 525 Mamers, NC 27552. Arrangements are by the Smith Funeral Home of Broadway.
