Edwin Lawrence Matthews, age 94 of Sanford, passed away on Thursday (2/11/2021) at his home.  He was born in Harnett County, son of the late Lammie Lawrence Matthews and Lura Wilbon Matthews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Virginia Baird, Louise Williford, and Janet Stephenson, brothers, Truitt Matthews, Jacob Lynn Matthews, and his wife of sixty-eight years, Mildred Cummings Matthews.  Edwin was a Veteran of the United States Army, served during World War II and retired from Heins Telephone Company.  Graveside funeral service will be held on Wednesday (2/17/2021) at 2:00pm at the Shallow Well Church Cemetery with Rev. David Priddy officiating.  He is survived by his daughter, Gilda M. Burns of Sanford, NC.  Son, Barry Matthews of Sanford, NC, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.  The family will receive friends at the family home and friends may visit the funeral home on Tuesday, between the hours of 1-5pm to sign the register.    Due to Covid -19, mask are requested for all services.  Online condolences can be made at www.smithfuneralhomebroadway.com Arrangements are by the Smith Funeral Home of Broadway.
