Obituary

Dr. Frances Blondell Kennedy Andrews, age 90 of Broadway, passed away on Sunday (3/2/2025) at her home.  She was born in Harnett County on May 31, 1934, daughter of the late Walker Haskel Kennedy and Evelyn Wade Kennedy.  She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Frankie Kennedy Sawyer and her husband, Don F. Andrews Sr.  Frances attended school in Sanford and graduated with the first class in 1952 from the new Sanford Central High School.  She furthered her education at Kings Business College, Winthrop College and UNC Greensboro, receiving her Doctorate in Education degree in 1983.  Throughout her distinguished career, she worked as a secretary to Governor Terry Sanford, served as the Administrative Assistant to the President and as an instructor at Bladen Community College.  She also worked in Thailand during the time that her husband was serving in the military.  The majority of her career was spent in various roles at Central Carolina Community College.  When she retired on October 1, 1999, she was the Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer for the college.  Education was very important to Frances and even in her later days, she was encouraging and promoting the importance of higher education to those around her.  She was also involved in her community, holding memberships or officer positions with several groups including the Lee County Democrats, Lee County Kiwanis, Woman's Club of Broadway, and Lee County Library Board.  She also served as an officer in several associations of the Community College system, was a former member at Congregational Christian Church in Sanford and was a member and Elder of Broadway Presbyterian Church. Surviving is her son, Donald F. Andrews Jr. and wife Lori of Broadway, NC; daughter, Lisa Sutton and husband Mac of Clinton, NC, and grandchildren, Dylan Andrews, Cherish Allen and Christopher Venable.  The family will receive friends on Wednesday (3/5/2025) from 6-8pm at the Smith Funeral Home in Broadway.  Funeral services will be conducted at 11am Thursday at Broadway Presbyterian Church with Rev. Garland Smith officiating.  Burial will follow in Lee Memory Gardens.  In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be made to the CCCC Foundation, 1105 Kelly Drive, Sanford, NC 27330 Attn: Emily Hare.  The family would like to express their appreciation to the caregivers from First Choice Home Care and Amedisys Hospice for the care provided to Frances during this time.  Online condolences can be made at www.smithfuneralhomebroadway.com Arrangements are by Smith Funeral Home, Broadway Inc.
