Geneva H. Cameron, age 99 of Broadway, died Wednesday (7/31/2013) at Liberty Commons in Sanford. She was born on December 20, 1913, the eldest child of John Lacy Harrington and Betty Sloan Harrington. She grew up on the family farm, was a graduate of Boone Trail High School and attended Elon College. She taught at Boone Trail School from 1932 until 1940 and then took time off to rear her children. In 1952 she resumed teaching at Broadway School and for over thirty years taught every grade from 3rd-8th. Her teaching spanned over fifty years and she guided thousands of Central Carolina students from several generations. She is remembered by her students as a firm teacher with high expectations who cherished and respected all her students. In 1938 she married J.B. Cameron and in 1942 moved into a new house in Broadway where she lived until she was 94. She was a member of the Broadway Presbyterian Church and for many years served as President of the Women of the Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John Burton Cameron Sr. and a grandson Josiah Cameron. Funeral services will be conducted at 11am Monday at the Broadway Presbyterian Church with Rev. Richard Rodda, Rev. Dr. Harold Stone and Rev. Doug Houston officiating. Burial will follow in the Broadway Town Cemetery. Surviving are her sons John Burton Cameron and wife Abby Van Vorhees of Philadelphia, PA and Dr. Harold H. "Hal" Cameron and wife Carole of New Bern, NC; Sisters Ginger Harrington of Sanford, NC, Nell H. Pate and husband Bruce of Spring Lake, NC and Polly H. Chandler of Broadway, NC; Grandchildren Mirielle "Mimi" Cameron of Colorado and, John Burton Cameron III of Broadway, NC, Asa Cameron of Ithaca, NY, David Cameron and Matthew Cameron both of Charlotte, NC; Great grandchildren Allen Cameron, Marguerite Cameron and Julia Cameron. The family will receive friends from 5:30-8:00pm Sunday evening at the Smith Funeral Home in Broadway. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials are made to the Broadway Presbyterian Church, PO Box 365 Broadway, NC 27505. Arrangements are by the Smith Funeral Home of Broadway.
