James W. (Bill) Jones Sr., died Thursday (3/24/2016) at his home. He was born on June 23, 1920 in Lee County to the late J.C. Jones Sr. and Myrtle Yarborough Jones. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wife Flora Lawhon Jones, Daughter Jane J. Dixon; Brothers Ervin, Wade B., J.C., Stanfield Jones and Sisters Ethel Jones James and Mamie Lee Jones Harrington. Mr. Jones was a member of the Broadway United Methodist Church since 1927, a charter member of the Broadway Lions Club and the American Legion Post 347, Member of the Junior Order U.A.M. and he served on the Board of Commissioners for the Town of Broadway for several years. Bill Jones also served in the U.S. Army Air Force from March 1942 to December 1945. He helped to organize the Broadway Fire Department in 1950 and was the Fire Chief for the first 10 years. He built, owned and operated Jones' Service Station for over 16 years and was a Civil Service employee at Pope Air Field, Simmons Air Field and Fort Bragg for 20 years. Funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 am Saturday at the Broadway United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike McVey officiating. Burial will follow at the Broadway Town Cemetery. Surviving are his sons James W. Jones Jr. and wife Rose of Southport, NC and Charles Allen Jones and wife Tammy of Broadway, NC and two grandsons Phillip and Andrew Jones of Broadway, NC. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Friday evening at the Smith Funeral Home in Broadway.
