Jay Beal Jeffries, age 89 of Broadway, passed away on Thursday (9/5/2019) at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.  He was born in Montgomery County, son of the late Doyle Lowhanna Jeffries and Gladys Beal Jeffries.  He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, four sisters, his wife Mildred McNeill Jeffries, son in law Brian Stafford and grandson Ben Stafford.  During his younger years at the Methodist Orphanage he was a star athlete playing basketball, football and baseball.  After graduation he went on to play Minor League baseball as a right fielder and star hitter for the El-Dorado Oilers, Orlando Sertomans, Clovis Pioneers and Boston Braves.  Jay was a graduate of Chowan College, worked for Kimbrell's Furniture and retired as the credit manager at Budd Tire. He was a member of  Mount Pisgah Presbyterian Church. Graveside Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 3:00pm at the Mount Pisgah Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Rev. Doug Houston officiating.   Surviving are his daughters Katrina J. Stafford of Broadway, NC and Carroll Cullen-Reck and husband Francis of Fuquay Varina, NC.  Sons Scott Jeffries and wife Amanda of Erwin, NC and Jay Jeffries II and wife Virginia of Sanford, NC.  Sister Vergie Cleavinger and husband Hal of Sanford, NC.  Grandchildren Anna Stafford, Paul Cullen, Andy Cullen, Dillon Jeffries, Mallary Caraway, Holden Caraway and eight great grandchildren.  The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Saturday evening at Smith Funeral Home in Broadway.  Online condolences can be made at www.smithfuneralhomebroadway.com Arrangements are by the Smith Funeral Home of Broadway.
