Jerry Taft Carter, age 77 of Sanford, passed away on Thursday (12/16/2021) at his home with his family by his side. He was born on June 12, 1944, son of the late Woodrow Taft Carter and Katherine Thomas Carter. Jerry graduated from Broadway High School Class of 1962. He attended the School of Radiological Technology in Durham which at that time was at Watts Hospital. Upon graduation he went to work at John Umstead Hospital in Butner. When he retired after 31 years of service, he returned to his childhood home. He worked at Sanford Medical Group for 15 years and later served on the staff of Smith Funeral Home for 11 years. Over his years of work, he made many lifelong friends in Butner, Durham, Roxboro, Chapel Hill and Raleigh as well as in and around his childhood home. He was a faithful member of Moore Union Christian Church. He served in many capacities, but will be best remember for his decorating skills. He felt that the most important things in his life were God, his family and his church family. Funeral services will be conducted at 3pm Sunday at Moore Union Christian Church with Rev. David Yarborough officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Surviving is his sister, Vivian Carter Thomas and husband Johnnie of Hickory, NC. Brother, Randy Carter and wife Susan of Broadway, NC. Nieces and nephews, Tracy Thomas (Steve McKendrick) of Palmer, Alaska, Tammy Thomas of Hickory, NC, Matthew Carter (Lauren) of Raleigh, NC, Keith Carter (Christina) of Thomasville, NC and Steven Carter (Kaitlin) of Huntersville, NC. Grand nieces and nephews, Jacob Adee, Abby, Hannah, Lincoln, Chloe, Lydia and Dean Carter. The family will greet friends at a celebration of life reception immediately following the service in the Moore Union Christian Church Fellowship Hall In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to Moore Union Christian Church, 4294 Buckhorn Road, Sanford, NC 27330. The family request that everyone attending the services please wear mask. Online condolences can be made at www.smithfuneralhomebroadway.com Arrangements are by the Smith Funeral Home of Broadway.
