John Rufus Holt, age 90 of Broadway, died Wednesday (2/8/2017) at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford. J.R. was born in Harnett County, son of the late Rufus Henry Holt and Josephine Angeline Griffin Holt. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sister Wilma Hunter, wife Eleanor Rosser Holt, daughter Martha Jo Holt Wyndham and son John David Holt. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy, was a member of the American Legion and was a member of the Broadway United Methodist Church. He worked for 66 years with LP Cox Company/American South as a Vice President and office manager. He served for many years as a Broadway Town Commissioner, was a local historian for Broadway and was a vivid reader who enjoyed gardening and flowers. Funeral services will be conducted at 2pm Saturday at the Broadway United Methodist Church with Rev. Michael McVey and Bishop Hope Morgan Ward officiating. Burial will follow in the Broadway Town Cemetery. Surviving is his daughter Mary Ann Holt of Broadway, NC; son John Rosser Holt and wife Judy of Monroe, GA. Sisters Jean Stevens of Sanford, NC and Camilla White of Broadway, NC. Brother Joseph Franklin Holt of Asheboro, NC, and one grandson Michael Holt and wife Catie of Monroe, GA. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6-8pm at the Smith Funeral Home in Broadway.
