Louise Sloan Buchanan, age 98 of Sanford, passed away on Tuesday (11/29/2022) at her daughter's home with her family by her side.  She was born in Lee County, daughter of the late Junious Curlin Sloan and Viola Mansfield Sloan.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Melvin "Buck" Buchanan, sisters Margaret Sloan Womack and Geneva Thomas and brothers, Jack Sloan, Ervin Sloan, and Bill Sloan.  She was a graduate of Broadway High School, and graduated as the Valedictorian of her class. Louise was a seamstress for 68 years, retiring from Lee Cleaners on Wicker Street.  Before she retired, she made one special wedding dress which she hand- sewed each and every pearl on by hand.  She was a Christian lady, and a faithful and longtime member of The Sanford Chapel.  Later years, she attended church with her family at Morris Chapel United Methodist Church.  She loved to work in her yard planting flowers, enjoyed her garden, and canning the vegetables that she grew.  She was in her home when the tornado of April 2011 destroyed the home that she and her husband built together.  She wanted to build her new home there, because it was home.  She loved cooking for her family, even though she sometimes overcooked the meat and burnt the bread.  She loved to eat fresh tomato sandwiches, biscuits and making snow cream when we did get snow.  W.D. (War Department) her nickname by her husband Buck, loved to travel with him before he passed away.  She was known to go to the beach and come back to Dunn to stay at the motel for a couple of days before returning home.  She and Buck attended all four of the grandchildren's graduations as well as games whether it be soccer, softball or baseball games.  She even attended the games of the great-grandchildren up until a year ago.   She loved to laugh and enjoyed life. She especially enjoyed the time spent with the family, grandkids and great-grandkids.  Her face would light up especially when the little ones would come into the room. Graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11am Thursday at Broadway Town Cemetery with Rev. Jerry Parsons and Rev. Doug Currin officiating.  Surviving are her daughters, Peggy Buchanan Baker and husband Danny of Sanford, NC and Rebecca "Becky" Buchanan Coltrane of Wake Forest, NC.  Sister, Mildred Sloan Stone of Broadway, NC.  Grandchildren, Geoffrey Coltrane (Sneha), Bryon Coltrane (Shirley), Stacey Baker Burris (Drew) and Daniel "Big Shot" Baker (Morgan) and special "grandson" Eddie Baker of Sanford, NC.    Great-grandchildren, Asha and Devak Coltrane; Kip, Kowen, Kora Grace, Kaleb, and Kinley Coltrane; Bryson and Calleigh Baker; and Jase and Cole Burris.  Special nieces, Sherry Womack and Donna Sloan; nephew Sammy Stone and other nieces and nephews.   The family will receive friends at the home of Danny and Peggy Baker.  We would like to thank Westfield Rehabilitation and their staff, Liberty Home Care and Amedisys Hospice for the good care they gave her.  Online condolences can be made at www.smithfuneralhomebroadway.com Arrangements are by the Smith Funeral Home of Broadway.
