Mary Alice Lett Crissman, age 87 of Sanford, passed away on Thursday (6/10/2021) at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.  She was born in Lee County, on the Lett Century Farm, daughter of the late John Wesley Lett and Bettie Ruth Lanier Lett.  She was preceded in death by her parents.  Mary Alice was a graduate of Broadway High School Class of 1952, with honors.  She excelled in short hand, typing and booking classes that would prepare her for her future career.  She worked in the principal's office, was a school bus driver for two years and received safety awards.  She was a member of the Beta Club and also served as the Editor of the school paper.  She began working at the Lee County Veterans Service Office in 1953 as a secretary and retired in March of 1997 after 44 years of service, retiring as the first female Veteran Services Officer in North Carolina.    She was also awarded the state's highest honor, "The Order of the Long Leaf Pine" by Gov. James B. Hunt Jr., for 44 years of outstanding and dedicated service to the Veterans of Lee County and the State of North Carolina.  Mary Alice also was an active and dedicated member of Moore Union Christian Church where she had served as a teacher, choir member, on many committees and was a life member.  Funeral service will be conducted at 2pm Sunday at Moore Union Christian Church with Rev. David Yarborough and Rev. Gary Moore officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Surviving is her brother, Herbert Lee Lett of Carolina Beach, NC.  Nephew, Terry Lee Lett and wife Tracy of Sanford, NC.  Niece, Michelle Lett Hunt and husband Scott of Sanford, NC.  She is also survived by her beloved great-nieces and nephews, Terry Lee Lett Jr., Tessa Lett, Timothy Lett, Tinsley Lett, Carson Hunt, Dillon Hunt, Kristi Hunt Moon (Justin) and their children.  She is also survived by her special Christian friends, Linda Carol Sloan, Jerry Carter, Linda and Gary Moore, James Shackleton and her beloved dog Rocky.  Friends may visit the Smith Funeral Home in Broadway on Saturday between the hours of 1pm-4pm to sign the register.  The family will receive friends following the funeral service in the Moore Union Church Fellowship Hall.  In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials made to the Moore Union Christian Church Cemetery Maintenance Fund.  Online condolences can be made at www.smithfuneralhomebroadway.com Arrangements are by the Smith Funeral Home of Broadway.
