Raymond (Ray) Clark Castleberry Jr., age 88 of Sanford, NC went home to be with his Lord on Saturday morning, October 1, 2022 while at home under the care of family and hospice. Ray was born in Wake County, NC, son of the late Raymond Clark Castleberry and Annie Pearl Seagroves Castleberry Atkins. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his step-father, Lloyd Easter Atkins. Ray grew up in New Hill and the Apex Community in NC, graduating from Apex High School. Ray met the love of his life, Marie McLeod Castleberry at the NC State Fair in Raleigh. She was from Asheboro, NC and after dating awhile, they were married April 11, 1952 in Lee County, NC, where they built a life together celebrating their 70 th wedding anniversary this past April with family and friends. Ray served in the US Army National Guard as an enlisted from 1951-1963, 12 years. Ray was employed by W. Koury Company of Sanford, where he worked for 33 years leaving as manager of the cutting department. Ray worked for a few years in Asheboro in the textile industry then we went into the second love of his life, the used car business. Ray enjoyed traveling, especially the cruises he and his wife Marie went on with those endless buffet bars. Ray was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Ray was a very hard worker, enjoyed doing lawn care, buying and detailing automobiles. After closing his used car business, he worked with Piggly Wiggly in the meat department in Jonesboro and Fresh Choice Café doing deliveries. Ray enjoyed people and life and shared his testimony every chance he got, there was never a doubt about his faith. People always remembered his smile. Ray is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Marie McLeod Castleberry. Children, Randy Castleberry and wife Robbie H. of Broadway; Shelia Byrd, husband Thesley of Sanford; Robin Castleberry, wife Tammy of Broadway, Jay Castleberry of Indiana and daughter-in-law, Lisa Castleberry Clawson of Pennsylvania. Grandchildren, Thesley Byrd. Jr., wife Mary Lee of Sanford; Jennifer Byrd Thomas, husband Kevin of Broadway, NC; Amanda Castleberry Vizvary, husband Steve of Spout Springs, Joe Dan Castleberry, wife Olivia of Sanford; Joshua Castleberry, wife Sarah of Texas; Tyler Castleberry of California; Taylor Clawson and Kaitland Clawson of Pennsylvania. Ray is survived by 12 great-grandchildren; his brother, Carl Castleberry, wife Pearl of Broadway; Sister-in-law, Marie Castleberry Kidle of Sanford, Step-Sister, Carolyn Atkins Strong, husband Bill of Sanford. Family and friends may pay their respected by visiting the home of Ray and Marie. There will be no services at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Liberty Hospice of Lee County, 1005 Carthage St. Sanford, NC 27330. The family would like to thank Westfield Rehabilitation and Health Center, Liberty Home Care, Liberty Hospice, Central Carolina Hospital, First Health Pinehurst, Duke University Hospital and their employees along with many local doctors, nurses and staff for the care they provided Ray.
