Roger Eugene Phillips Sr. age 82 of Sanford, died Wednesday (3/25/2015) at Sanford Health and Rehab Center. He was born in Moore County, son of the late William Fountain Phillips and Jessie Pearl Joyce Phillips. He was preceded in death by his parents; Brothers Howard Phillips, Harold Phillips, Bill Phillips, Norman Phillips, Rev. Jimmy Phillips, Weldon Phillips; Sisters Edith P. Frye and Ruby Pearl Phillips. He was a member of the Poplar Springs United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees and as a Sunday School Teacher for many years. He was an Honorably Discharged Veteran of the United States Air Force and was a retired Insurance Agent with Durham Life. He enjoyed cooking BBQ for the community, fishing and N.C. State Athletics. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00pm Sunday at the Poplar Springs United Methodist Church with Rev. Garland Smith and Rev. Fallon Melvin officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Surviving is his wife of 60 years, Rebecca Anne Phillips of the home; Sons Roger Eugene Phillips Jr. and wife Annette of Burlington, NC and Richard Paul Phillips and wife Jan of Bear Creek, NC; Brothers Melvin Phillips and wife Margaret and Travis Phillips and wife Betty of Sanford, NC; Grandchildren Blair Nail, Jennifer Williams, Casey Phillips, Keith Phillips; Step grandson Jeremy Diven and three great grandchildren, Will Phillips, Walt Phillips and Hadley Nail. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Saturday evening at the Smith Funeral Home in Broadway.
