Samuel Vernon McArthur, age 96 of Broadway, passed away on Wednesday (5/5/2021) at his home. He was born in Harnett County, son of the late Alton Norman McArthur and Maggie Vera McNeill McArthur. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Norman McArthur, Willie Gray McArthur, Ophelia Johnson, Kate Thomas, Edna Kelly, Patricia McArthur, Catherine Starkey, John McArthur and his beloved wife Delsie Brown McArthur. Sam was a Veteran of the United States Navy and served during World War II. He was a graduate of Boone Trail High School, Class of 1947 and was a member of Mt. Pisgah Presbyterian Church, sang in the choir for many years and received the Elder Emeritus award. He was a member of the Boone Trail Ruritan Club, was a longtime member of the Upper Little River Hunting Club and was a member of the Seven Seas Club. Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2pm Sunday at the Mount Pisgah Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Rev. Doug Houston officiating with military honors. Surviving are his sons, James Michael McArthur of Broadway, NC and Robert Vernon McArthur and wife Yvonne of Broadway, NC. Daughter, Phyllis Ann McArthur Pearson of Zebulon, NC. Brother, Rexford McArthur of Broadway, NC. Grandchildren, Erica Ammons (James) of Nevada, Johnnie Andrew Pearson (Amy) of Alabama, Cindy Burton (Chris) of Moncure, NC. Jamie White (James), Samantha Eller (Eric) and Robert McArthur II (Jessica) all of Broadway and 14 great-grandchildren. Friends may visit the Smith Funeral Home on Saturday, between the hours of 1pm-5pm to sign the register. The family will receive friends at Sam's home. Members of the Boone Trail Ruritan Club and Upper Little River Hunting Club are requested to be honorary pallbearers.
