Shirley Ann Thomas Buchanan, age 87 of Broadway, passed away on Saturday (9/2/2023) at Sanford Health and Rehab. She was born on April 28, 1936, daughter of the late Hazel Mac Thomas and Louise Hunter Thomas.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bobby Buchanan and sisters, Dot Anderson and Ruth Womack.  Shirley was a graduate of Appalachian State College and retired after 30 years as an educator with Lee County Schools.  She served as the pianist for many years at Broadway United Methodist Church where she was a member.  She also taught line dancing at the Enrichment Center for many years.   She is survived by her daughters, Cindy Johnson and husband John of Sanford, NC and Mary Buchanan of Sanford, NC.  Brother, Gary Thomas and wife Patricia of Broadway, NC.  Grandchildren, Justin Johnson of Sanford, NC and Amanda Pope and husband Jacob of Raleigh, NC.  Twin great-grandsons, Evan and Liam Johnson and special cousin, Yvonne Kelly and husband Donald Ray of Summerville, SC.  Funeral services will be conducted at 11am Wednesday at Broadway United Methodist Church with Rev. J. Scott Finicum officiating.  Burial will follow in the Broadway Town Cemetery.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at church.  In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to the Baptist Children's Homes of North Carolina, PO Box 338 Thomasville, NC 27360 for the IDD program.  Condolences can be made at www.smithfuneralhomebroadway.com  Arrangements are by the Smith Funeral Home, Broadway.
