Obituary

Walter Howard McMillan, age 84 of Sanford, died Thursday (6/30/2016) at Parkview Retirement Center. He was born on July 16, 1931 in Surry County, NC, son of the late Carlos McMillan and Ila Belle Draughn McMillan. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his son Ronnie McMillan. He was a Veteran of the United States Air Force, serving with the 511th Fighter Bomb Squadron. He worked as an Industrial Engineer from 1961-1980, he also worked at Whitin Roberts, Davenport and as a funeral associate at Smith Funeral Home. He was a member of Buffalo Masonic Lodge No. 172 AF&AM, where he was a Past Master and Past District Deputy Grand Master of the 31st Masonic District of the Grand Lodge of NC AF&AM. He was a member of the Amran Shrine, the Scottish Rite Valley of Raleigh where he was a member of the Knight Commander of the Court of Honor. He was also past President of the Lee County Scottish Rite Club and the Sanford Shrine Club. He was a member of the Northview Christian Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00pm Sunday at the Northview Christian Church with Rev. Mike Johnson and Rev. Garland Smith officiating. Entombment will follow at the Lee Memory Gardens Mausoleum with Military and Masonic Honors. Surviving are his wife Christine Gore McMillan of the home; Daughters Pam Brown of Broadway, NC and Pam M. Vulgamore of Waverly, Ohio; Sons Steven McMillan of Siler City, NC and Kenneth H. Grainger and wife Darlene of Cameron, NC; Sister Fairbell Pigford and husband Bailey of Goldston, NC; Brothers C.G. McMilllan and wife Olena of Roxboro, NC, Bobby McMillan of Siler City, NC, Dr. Roger McMillan and wife Laura of Virginia Beach, VA and Jimmy McMillan and wife Tappy of Concord, NC; Eight grandchildren Rebecca Maddox, Brian Haigler, Stephanie Nelson, Melissa Burgess, Chad Grainger, Audra Edwards and Jessica McMillan and five great grandchildren. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service at the Northview Christian Church Fellowship Hall.
